ARISER was founded in 1910. At present time it is one of the leading centers in Russia on plant breeding and seed production of field crops and development of plant growing technologies for arid regions. Institute's staff includes 13 full Doctors of Sciences and 53 Kandidates of Sciences. ARISER have 4 experimental stations, experimental engineering department and 9 experimental farms. Institute possesses 110 thousand ha of arable land for reproduction of new cultivars and hybrids and development of new technologies for plant growing.
The main fields of researches are:
• theoretical investigations on plant physiology, biochemistry, and genetics of drought-, heat- and frost-resistance of agricultural crops, genetics of plant reproductive systems;
• development biotechnological methods of plant breeding;
• breeding of cereal and other field crops resistant to abiotic- and biotic stresses;
• development of soil-protective and resource-consuming technologies for plant growing;
• breeding of livestock adaptive for severe hot and dry summer and very cool winter conditions of Volga-Region and South-East Region of Russia.
Creation of new cultuvars of different crops is performed on the base of modern achievements of genetics and biotechnology. Among these crops are winter bread wheat, winter rye, hard spring bread and durum wheat, barley, proso millet, maize, sunflower, alfalfa, sainfoin, sorghum and sudan grass, soybean, chickpea and some others.
During last 1996-1999 years 27 cultivars have been released. Overall sowing area in Russia occupied by cultivars that had been created in ARISER is 12 billion ha. The most popular newly developed varieties of cereal crop are:

Cultivars created in past years possess both drought-resistance and resistance to the main pathogens and sympathy to favorable conditions.
Cost-consuming and water-preserved technologies for growing of all these crops have been developed. Investigations on optimization and ecologization of field rotations are conveyed. Scientific bases of maintenance and reproduction of soil fertility have been developed. These technologies allow realization of the genetic potential of new cultivars and stabilization of seed production. They make safe agricultural production under dry conditions in Saratov Region and in other regions of Russia.
